Things picked up some more in the 1960´s when Miami became the second home for thousands of Cubans fleeing Castro. That stormy decade went out with bang, with protests in Miami Beach and race riots in Liberty City sparked by the presidential nomination of Richard Nixon at the 1968 Republican National Convention. The 1970´s were the glory days of the hometown football team, the Dolphins, and the 1980´s kicked off with Mariel boat lift of political refugees from Cuba to South Florida. An explosion of immigration from South America, Central America, and the Caribbean and, or course, the explosion of Miami Vice on television rounded out the decade. South Beach was reborn as "Sobe" crammed with more models, more movies and fashion shoots, more art deco hotels, more outdoor cafes, and more retro fashion per square foot that anyplace else on Earth.

In a little more than 100 years of boom and bust, high and low times, Miami has endured it all.
