Look for the gold dome of the Miami Seaquarium, one of the country´s first marine attractions. Opposite the causeway from the Seaquarium, a road leads north to Virginia Key Beach and the adjacent Virginia Key Critical Wildlife Area.
Key Biscayne
From Virginia Key the causeway crosses Bear Cut to the north end of Key Biscayne and becomes Crandon Boulevard. The Boulevard bisects 1,211 acre Crandon Park, with a popular Atlantic Ocean beach and nature center. On your right are entrances to the Crandon Park Golf Course and the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, home of the Nasdaq 100 open. From the traffic circle at the south end of Crandon Park, Crandon Boulevard continues to the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area, a 460 acre park with the brick Cape Florida Lighthouse and light keeper´s cottage. Follow Crandon Boulevard back to Crandon Park trough Key Biscayne´s downtown village, where shops and a 10 acre village green cater mainly to local residents. On your way back to the mainland, pause as you approach the Powell Bridge to admire the Miami skyline. At night the brightly lighted Bank of America building looks like a clipper ship running under full sail before the breeze.
Key Biscayne´s long and winding roads are great for rollerblading and bicycling, and its lush laziness provides a respite from the buzz-saw tempo of SoBe.
